Old, Small, Beautiful
China Coast is the oldest AIMS-certified marathon in Hong Kong and surely one of the toughest road marathons in the region. Hong Kong's small and beautiful (compared to bigger sibling Standard Chartered) marathon is taking runners to the end of Hong Kong's second-largest reservoir in Sai Kung Country Park. The Y-shaped course includes challenging hills but temperature is normally cooler (18 degrees C) than at Hong Kong Marathon, which takes place later in the year. However, Hong Kong's humidity even in the cool season can, together with the hilly profile, make it difficult to achieve fast times. Full marathon runners have to run the route twice. The marathon is run along with a half marathon and the Community Chest's 10km Corporate Challenge.
5-Star Scenery and Organisation
The organization by AVoHK, one of Hong Kong's oldest sports clubs, is very good. Plenty of the water for all distances and sports drinks for the marathon runners are provided at a sufficient number of stations along the course (Sponsor: Bonaqua) and the enthusiastic AVoHK volunteers cheer you on from the drink and sponge stations The China Coast Marathon is also supported by title sponsor Sun Hung Kai Properties (Hang Seng index constituent). One of the Kwok brothers (Thomas) who are at the helm of this property developer is said to be a regular participant in the half marathon race. T-Shirt sponsor New Balance even provided a free after-race massage to any half and full marathon finisher who wore New Balance Running Shoes on the race day. Champion Chip is used for timing. Except for the more relaxed participants of the Corporate Challenge, there are only few spectators along the route.
